Packaged Metering Manhole Installation To Existing Pipe

A packaged metering manhole is an extremely useful flow measurement tool when you need to measure a piped flow. If you’re attaching your manhole to a pre-existing pipe, however, you must be very careful about the installation process to make sure that you’re able to take the measurements you need when the project is finished.

Before you begin your installation project, it’s a good idea to review a few of the steps so that you know what to expect.  Here are some tips for packaged metering manhole installation when you’re incorporating your device into an existing pipe.

Site Excavation

The first step to setting up your manhole is to choose and excavate an installation site. During excavation, your installers will have two primary goals. First, they need to make sure the space is large enough to accommodate both the manhole and a concrete pad. Second, they must be very careful to not damage the pipe. A section of the pipe must be fully exposed after excavation so that the installation process can continue.

Form the Pad

After the excavation is complete, forming the pad is the next step of the installation process. Sizing the pad correctly is of the utmost importance. If your concrete pad is too small, you will not be able to effectively install your packaged manhole.

When you’re pouring your concrete pad, you should make sure that there is enough room for your manhole as well as your flume and any stubs that you may need to attach to your flume. You will also need to make sure that the pad is level and completely smooth before you move in the packaged metering manhole installation process.

Installing the Manhole

Now it’s time to get down to the heavy work of installing your manhole. First, you need to cut and remove a section of pipe so that there’s a place for your manhole. With your pipe cut, you can carefully lower your manhole into place on the concrete pad.

Next, you should position and attach all necessary couplings to your manhole. The couplings will keep your manhole in the proper position. Once the couplings are ready, you should make sure that your manhole is level, as this will ensure that flow will move through your device correctly.

Finally, you’ll need to backfill the excavation site. Backfilling should be done very carefully so that you don’t accidentally misplace your manhole and have to dig up the device again for re-leveling. Your backfill materials should be clean, and you should make sure to cover your entire manhole save for the top.
