Tips for Maintaining Your Weir Box

After you’ve installed a weir box in your open channel flow system, you want to be certain that it will always function the way that you need. Fortunately, with just a little regular maintenance, you should be able to keep your weir box up and running with ease. Here are a few weir box maintenance tips that you should keep in mind if you want your device to work the way that you need.

Inspect the Weir Pool

Regularly inspecting the weir pool in your weir box is the most important thing you can do to maintain your device’s functionality. In particular, you need to regularly check the floor of the weir pool to see if there is any debris or sediment build-up.

When sediment accumulates on the floor of the weir pool, it can change the water level, which will throw off your flow readings. If you do see debris or sediment in your weir pool, clean it out so that you can take the accurate readings that you need.

Examine Your Weir Crest

After you’ve inspected and cleaned the weir pool, you should move on to inspecting the weir crest. The crest is perhaps the most important part of your weir box, so be certain to take your time with this inspection.

First, you should make sure that the crest is level. The crest needs to be level vertically and horizontally so that flow can make its way across the crest easily. Next, you should clean the crest. Remove any debris or vegetative growth that could potentially interfere with free flow.

Finally, and most importantly, you should inspect your weir crest for signs of damage. In particular, look for issues that might interfere with the flow, including rusting, nicks and dents.

Look for Leakage and Check the Channel

For your weir box to function correctly, it must be free from leaks. When flow leaks out of your weir box, it can affect the accuracy of your readings to a significant degree. First, you should carefully examine the weir plate to any signs of leaking. It’s possible that the plate may have become dislodged during installation, which would result in leakage. Next, you should inspect both the inlet and outlet ports of the weir box. If the end connections aren’t tight, flow can easily leak and cause your readings to be inaccurate.

After you’ve inspected for leakage, you should inspect the installation channel. If the discharge is allowed to spill freely, it can cause the downstream channel to wash away, which is called scouring. To prevent this, you may wish to add support to the channel. You should also clean any debris in the downstream channel that could interfere with the flow.
