Five portable flumes were developed in the mid-1980's by Marinus Bos (International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvements), John Repolge and Albert Clemmens (U.S. Water Conservation Laboratory), for use in measuring very low flows in furrows and small earthen channels. More accurately defined as broad-crested weirs; RBC flumes are in some ways a cross between Trapezoidal and Palmer-Bowlus flumes.
RBC flumes are sized by throat width and range in size from 50mm to 200mm. The flumes are scale models of each other (as with Palmer-Bowlus flumes) and follow standardized dimensions. For flumes provided without the inlet and outlet wingwalls, grout should be used to create a smooth transition from the channel into and out of the flume. RBC flumes should only be used in those applications where little or no solids are expected due to the physical size of the flume. Channel slope should not exceed 1%.
